Overview
Morpho Blue markets are isolated, immutable, permissionless to create, and persist as long as the chain does. Risk curation lives in a separate vault layer, Morpho Vaults, curated by independent firms, rather than in the protocol itself. Supersmooth integrates Morpho Blue markets directly for Borrow, Multiply, and Yield Loop positions, and includes Morpho Vaults separately in Supersmooth Earn.Origin and timeline
Morpho Labs, founded in 2021 by Paul Frambot, first built the Morpho Optimizer, a peer-to-peer rate improvement layer on top of Aave and Compound. Morpho Blue, released in January 2024, inverted that model: instead of optimizing monolithic pools, Morpho Blue is a governance-minimized primitive that lets the market build on top of it. Morpho is now among the largest lending protocols by deposits. Morpho has since added Midnight, which provides fixed-rate offer-based markets alongside Blue’s variable-rate markets.Design tradeoffs
- Immutable contracts, governance-minimized: a Morpho Blue market’s five parameters can never change after creation, so nothing can be voted out from under a user’s position. The flip side is that nothing can be patched either.
- Isolated pairs: risk is contained per market, so one bad oracle hurts one market rather than a shared pool. The cost is fragmented liquidity compared with Aave’s unified pools.
- Permissionless creation: the best and the worst Morpho markets coexist, so market selection matters more on Morpho than anywhere else.
- LLTV tiers: governance-approved Morpho LLTV tiers run from 38.5% up to 98%, which are meaningfully higher ceilings on correlated pairs than pooled venues typically allow, for example wstETH against WETH at 94.5%.
