Overview
SparkLend is a pooled-liquidity money market technically derived from Aave v3 under license. Supersmooth uses Spark for Borrow, Multiply, and Yield Loop positions on Ethereum Mainnet. Because Spark stablecoin liquidity comes directly from Sky reserves, rates are set by governance rather than by utilization spikes, producing predictable carry for multiplied strategies.Origin and timeline
Phoenix Labs launched Spark in 2023 as the MakerDAO lending frontier, technically derived from Aave v3 under license. Spark became part of the Sky ecosystem rebrand in 2024, and the SPK token launched in 2025 with staking, points, and rewards programs following. Spark describes itself as a two-sided capital allocator: on one side Spark borrows from Sky stablecoin reserves and deploys across DeFi, CeFi, and real-world assets; on the other side Spark packages that yield into user products. The three Spark pillars are Spark Savings, which covers sUSDS and savings vaults; SparkLend, which is the money market Supersmooth integrates; and the Spark Liquidity Layer, which provides direct liquidity into DeFi markets and is an evolution of the MakerDAO D3M.Design tradeoffs
- Sky-backed stablecoin liquidity: SparkLend stablecoin borrow liquidity comes directly from Sky reserves, with rates set by governance rather than by utilization spikes. This produces predictable carry for multiplied strategies, but rates move by governance decision.
- Aave v3 mechanics: Spark uses the same partial-liquidation and E-mode machinery as Aave v3, so risk behavior is familiar.
- Coverage: Spark on Supersmooth is Ethereum Mainnet only, and Spark asset selection is narrower than Aave’s.
